I think you're right about that. A black man could probably rush the mound in a MLB game and not be called a thug. The one difference is the culture surrounding the NBA versus other sports.

Bell's right to say that there are deeper issues at play, though. The descriptions of the brawlers may not be a result of overt racism against the players as individuals, but the fighters are clearly being lumped into a racist stereotype of "black" culture.

That's true. I wonder if the bit about NFL players has anything to do with the fact that the NBA is more associated with "hip hop culture" or whatever.

I think race is a factor but there are others beyond that too. In the case of hockey, it's almost a tradition of the game to fight so when they happen, they're not overstepping the bounds of hockey sportsmanship. Also, NFL players are predominantly black but they can fight and engage in bad behavior without being labels as thugs.

I linked to the same article. However, he doesn't appear to have a lot more wins than you'd expect from a decent player who's been persistent for a long time, and all of his books are published by a house he owns, so I wasn't sure how much stock to put into that claim. If you've heard independent verification, that's interesting news.

Also, I should point out that Sklansky is not just a poker player and author, but one of the most prominent and well-respected poker theorists. Just to point out that, just as people who are stupid (from an atheist perspective) about faith need not also be stupid about numbers, Sklansky's genius with numbers doesn't prevent him from being stupid about people.

I may have less of a tendency to identify with groups than most, but I don't think of Sklansky as reflecting poorly on atheists by being an asshole -- rather, he's just an asshole. In this case, he happens to be an asshole about atheism. In fact, I'd go further and say that the urge to caricature believers as dumb rubes isn't unique to atheists, but is simple a specific form of the general human tendency to be assholes to each other.

Yeah, I wrote the paragraph thinking there were more technical jokes in the original post, but looking back all you really have to know is what DRM is. Sorry, you really shouldn't have made the list of people mentioned at all.

Much like how Sony pwned me with their unsellable PS3. I ended up with a net profit of $-8 on the deal. I was at $-4 but USPS told me that because the woman lived near, I could get it to her before Christmas by paying $4 extra. I decided that if I'm gonna lose money on this thing, I might as well make someone happy.

Now her spoiled brat of a kid will get a PS3 for Christmas. Poor woman.
